Julie Desprairies

Julie Desprairies, born in Paris in 1975, is an atypical choreographer. She has worked on a regular basis with famous filmmakers: she collaborated with Serge Bozon on the now classic Mods (2003). She never conceives her work for the stage but only works in urban spaces or on buildings (Villeurbanne skyscrapper, Lyons Biennal 2006). Her creations remain unique “events”, part performance, part moving architecture, with dancers who are rarely professionals. Initially attracted to the 1930s and modernism (Willem Marinus Dudok 2000, André Lurçat 2004), she recently designed a “choreographic environment” for a building by Christian de Portzamparc and worked extensively on movement within workplaces (residency at the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres, 2006-2008). Her creations are frequently the subject of recordings or films, in collaboration with filmmakers and visual artists (L’architecte de Saint-Gaudens, co-directed with Serge Bozon, 2015, has been selected at Locarno festival).
